Less Fan Work More OG Art!

Posted by InsaneDingoArt - August 25th, 2023

So I was organizing my art folders on Da and Fa the other day, and I realized that from about 1k art posts that only less than 200 were related to any of my original ideas.

I felt a little ashamed, tbh 😔 I'm not really sad or anything, but seeing the ratio kind of makes it like, "no wonder, no one is a fan of your original stuff when you don't post it as much!"

I am trying to change that and play less to a crowd and more so to what i want to post. It's why burnout happens, i think. I want to take my own work more seriously and make something of it already. So I guess expect to see less fan art and more original stuff from me from now on! 🐶✨

I don’t know you, but your decision makes sense. People can still find the fanart when they look on the art sites for those fandoms. They’ll come for the fanart and stay for your own projects, ideally.

Yeah! I think that was my initial plan with posting online. build a bit of a following with requests/commissions/fanart and eventually post more original stuff. I think its about time to focus more the original stuff now though!

Good idea, but I suppose it would help to keep the art focused on one OC universe instead of just drawing a bunch of random original characters like I currently do--basically, like how brilliant artists here like Ennuikai pretty much just draw Trudy and her world with some Jojo's Bizarre Adventure fan art in between. I've got to start focusing myself on getting people interested in one of the two series I've always wanted to make, either "Mr. Needle in da Real World" or "Punk n' Gunk" (properly the latter, since it is slightly less ambitious/less expensive to make on my own).

What I think would REALLY help avoid burnout, though, is to have a private sketchbook to just draw whatever you feel like, whenever you feel like it, that you don't post on the Internet to remind you to at least draw for the fun of it from time to time. Not everything you draw has to be shown on the Internet, sometimes you just want to just scribble on some paper because you're not in the mood to spend your free time watching TV or playing video games that time.

Thanks for the encouragement! I too have alot of ideas. too many to realistically do all of them but what i like to do is keep some of those ideas or characters and change/adjust them to fit better with the main idea i wanna do. gives me the opportunity to maybe play with those ideas in some ways down the line. maybe you should do that too!
.
As for finding time to sketch for myself and not post some art pieces that i do for myself, i already sort of do that. lol I have so much stuff that never gets put up either because i feel the quality is lacking or it was just done as a joke that no one online will really understand. that stuff is still fun to make but yeah-i agree its nice to do every once in a while too!
